Artist Feature: Ian Butcher

I make three dimensional collage in all kinds of forms and sizes – in a style I believe is unique to me. Imagine any kind of subject photographed, printed on art card, cut into pieces and assembled to give the maximum 3D illusion.

I’m inspired by everything and anything – all the major art movements – and my work takes in everything from cityscapes to food, florals and portraits.

I believe any exposure outside of a traditional gallery structure is extremely valuable – especially where work is highly unusual. ArtCan facilitates some brilliant exhibitions and opportunities for artists in exciting new spaces and places.

I am always seeking new ways to showcase my work – during the pandemic I placed works in the windows of my home and invited passers-by to view my mini exhibition from the garden – they came in droves! I am also lucky enough to have been selected for the RA Summer Exhibition more than once.

I am lucky I don’t have to balance my art practice with any other work, and I have a studio at my home in Teddington. I plan to continue making art until I drop! I regularly take part in open studio events, and welcome visitors to see my creations in person by appointment.

My advice to other artists at the beginning of their journey is to be uniquely yourselves, and do your best to develop your skills in your chosen field as much as possible.

A self-taught artist living and working in London, I primarily use acrylic, oils and found materials on canvas. I favours bright colours and plenty of texture, finding most of my inspiration in the natural world and in my favourite music.
