Exhibition Title | ρ ≠ 0
Organised by | ArtCan × K:art Studio
Curator | Yuange Sheng
Exhibition Period | June 4 – 30 2026
Presented by ArtCan in collaboration with K:art Studio, the international group exhibition ρ ≠ 0 brings together artists from across the UK, China, South Korea, Japan, Australia, and beyond. Through sculpture, painting, moving image, sound, and installation, the exhibition explores how density continues to persist within contemporary systems of materiality, perception, and embodiment.
The exhibition title, ρ ≠ 0, takes its name from the mathematical symbol for density. It begins with a simple yet urgent proposition:
Density has not vanished.
In an era increasingly shaped by algorithms, interfaces, and digital infrastructures, contact is flattened into gestures, screens, and streams of information. As resistance appears to disappear, the world becomes smoother, faster, and seemingly lighter. Yet ρ ≠ 0 asks a different question: if weight is disappearing from our surroundings, where has it gone?
The exhibition unfolds through two overlapping sections.
The Ground Floor focuses on external density, examining the systems and structures that shape collective experience. History, religion, trade, measurement, domestication, and grand narratives are reconfigured and questioned through artistic intervention. Dafu Yan’s Domestication reflects on the reciprocal relationship between humans and the systems they believe they control. Keren He’s works expose the absurdity of consumer culture and endless labour cycles. Ruocheng Zhou reconstructs cinematic narrative as a space for selfhood and projection, while Kexin Zhang interrogates faith, salvation, and ideological authority. Yuncen Liu’s QRruler series reimagines traditional measuring tools through the visual language of data and machine-readable systems.
Alongside these works, Yuange Sheng’s Scaffolding and Victoria Yuan’s The Host Body investigate the instability of structures themselves. Through themes of rupture, repair, containment, and transformation, both artists explore how systems sustain themselves while remaining fundamentally vulnerable to change.
As visitors move to the First Floor, the exhibition gradually shifts inward.
The second section focuses on internalized density, exploring how external systems become embedded within the body, perception, and consciousness. Andrea Samory’s Signal and Infection series examine how invisible digital forces infiltrate emotional and physiological experience, while Megumi Ohata’s Skin Garment reflects on skin as both protection and vulnerability. Jinseul Park’s Silent Outcry addresses inherited trauma through the Korean concept of Han, and Soh Young Lee’s A Deep Breath explores pregnancy, motherhood, resilience, and emotional complexity.
Kian Hao’s moving image series Sunset Is the Edge of a Celestial Body expands the exhibition toward cosmic and atmospheric scales, positioning perception between intimacy and vastness. Meanwhile, David Koh’s I Haunt Myself and Yoga to the Robots provide a distinctly contemporary conclusion, exploring digital memory, AI, productivity culture, and self-optimization. Together, these works ask what happens when our identities, histories, and bodies become inseparable from the systems that record and regulate them.
Chris Avis, Elizabeth Mikellides, Henriette Busch, Linda C Burrows, Louise Dale Chalmers, Paul Butterworth, and Svetlana Atlavina contribute works that further expand the exhibition’s exploration of memory, materiality, narrative, and perception. Their contributions create a meaningful dialogue across different cultural contexts and artistic approaches.
As a fully virtual exhibition, ρ ≠ 0 treats digital space not simply as a platform for display, but as an active component of its curatorial framework. Developed within ArtCan’s Virtual Gallery and realised with the support of the TD360 team, the exhibition uses the immaterial nature of online space to deepen its investigation into weight, resistance, embodiment, and perception. The resulting tension between digital environments and bodily experience becomes one of the exhibition’s central questions.
Ultimately, ρ ≠ 0 asks:
In an age increasingly defined by speed, smoothness, and dematerialization, what still carries weight?
