What is your art practice? What themes do you explore and why?

I tell a story on canvas with oil paint. I capture a moment, a feeling that resonates with my audiences. My inspirations comes from observing life, exploring a concept, or a theme that people can relate to. My body of work ranges from traditional realistic portraits, and contemporary landscapes to topical themes in graphic style. The range comes from the diversity of my passions, from a once classical chorister to a Hip Hop dance manager. These experiences influence the conceptual approach in my art. I strive for a spectrum of styles often with a strong female presence to engage my audiences.
Which artists and movements historically have influenced you?
I’ve always loved the techniques of the Old Masters painting, that sense of depth, light, and craftsmanship, but the stories I tell on canvas are very much rooted in the world around me today. A lot of my inspiration comes from everyday observations and things I notice happening in society. I often find myself drawn to female narratives in particular—exploring identity, visibility, and the subtle expectations placed on women.
How important do you think it is that ArtCan is able to offer opportunities for exhibiting outside of a formal gallery structure?
Very important, because not every artist has access to those galleries.
Do you have to balance your art practice with other work?

Yes, I balance my art practice with teaching Qigong and Tai Chi, and the two really inform each other. The practice keeps me grounded and present, and I find that when my Qi (life energy) is flowing, everything else flows too – my focus, my creativity, and the ideas behind my paintings…
What would be your advice for artists just starting out?
Let go of what others think of your work. Every piece will find its own audience.
What are your next big plans as an artist?
I don’t really have one big master plan. For me, it’s about continuing to create work that resonates with people in an honest way. If my paintings can connect with someone, spark a thought, or bring a moment of joy or stillness, that feels like the right direction to keep moving in.
