Top Picks: Affordable Art Fair Hampstead

Cat Sweet for ArtCan | May 2019

The Hampstead edition of the Affordable Art Fair was bustling – plenty of fresh and innovative works, friendly artists and happy buyers.

There was a wonderful range of metal work and sculpture on offer this time around, including delicate pieces from Ian Turnock with The Art Agency, and from artists with Visus Gallery.

Stefan MAS Persson also presented Escher-like collages of acrylic on board with Bruno Dahl Gallery – beautiful, mind-bending treats for the eyes. ArtCan artists on show included Laura Fishman with Mint Gallery, who also rep the brilliant Damilola Odusote and his fabulous range of 3D moulded works, drawings and lightboxes, plus Despina Symeou with ContemporArti London.

Ana Palma was a pleasure to talk to – her work is represented by VC Contemporary Art and features delicate and yet visceral drawings with bold splashes of colour. Jo Holdsworth, recent winner of the Royal Arts Prize Visitors’ Choice Award, was on show with NoonPowell Fine Arts – she paints striking and enigmatic figures in urban landscapes that represent ephemeral, snatched moments when her subjects appear to be lost in thought.

Stella Hidden and Louise McNaught always bring a reliable burst of colour and beauty as well – the latter through her series of animal portraits which highlight the serious business of conservation efforts around the globe.

The Affordable Art Fair is always a good bet to find a good range of skill, subjects and showmanship – definitely worth a look in at one of their next instalments (check out https://affordableartfair.com/ for dates).
