Exhibition now extended until the 23rd of April.
Prelude, a virtual exhibition of ArtCan member artists, is presented by ArtCan, a not-for-profit arts organisation that empowers artists by creating opportunities.
Prelude: prɛljuːd | breathe new life into 2021. Imbued with Hope. A new start.
Prelude’, adoption (16th century) from Late Latin praelūdium, to Latin praelūdere ‘to play for practice or rehearsal, to make a prelude, ‘to hold’, also ‘to prepare’ (cf. Latin lūdere ‘to play’). The word is figuratively used to indicate ‘what precedes a process’ and also ‘sign, beginning’, also originating in the 16th century. PRELUDE is a group show of ArtCan artist members and is ArtCan’s first virtual exhibition of 2021.
The way in which we practice has changed somewhat although we continue to work: to research, develop, plan, nurture creative projects, experiment. We are looking forward to a regenerated 2021 – alternative, unknown, exciting.

“It has been my absolute pleasure to curate this inspiring collection of work for PRELUDE, ArtCan’s first virtual exhibition of 2021.
As we look towards Spring PRELUDE projects an uplifting vision of Hope. Through an eclectic aesthetic of brightness and freshness PRELUDE counteracts the long winter of lockdown III. Forward looking, PRELUDE is a timely antidote.”
Andrea C Morley
“The selection of works for the exhibition Prelude was very exciting and inspiring.
You could literally feel the joy, the new beginning as well as the passion for art. I think that with this exhibition we have set a positive marker for the beginning of this year.”

Editor’s Notes:
ABOUT ARTCAN
ArtCan is an artist-led, non-profit arts organisation creating opportunities for artists through exhibitions and practice development in Britain and internationally. Our exhibitions complement the work of established galleries by enabling talent to gain experience and skills. We work with galleries, but also seek new spaces where art becomes a part of everyday life and with the aim of involving audiences in an organic and personal way.
ArtCan’s artist-centred ethos means that our model does not involve charging membership fees or commissions on sales, to help artists focus on developing a sustainable practice. When you purchase a piece at an ArtCan event, you deal directly with the artist, who receives 100% of the payment. exhibition and project opportunities.

SUPPORTING ARTCAN FINANCIALLY
ArtCan is a volunteer-led organisation funded primarily by exhibition fees, sponsorship and our ‘Friends of ArtCan’. Our Friends are a circle of our closest supporters who believe fervently in what we are doing and achieving in today’s society. They provide key, reliable funding to the organisation and in return, we provide them with access to our exhibitions, artists and special events (for example, pre-opening private views, studio tours with artists, or members-only networking events – in person and/or online). Levels of support range from £30 to £1,000. To join this dynamic group of supporters, check our Friends of ArtCan page for the level which is right for you or contact Membership Director Hannah Pratt at friends@artcan.org.uk for full details.
