Then & Now

ArtCan Virtual Gallery

1 Dec 2023 – 1 Feb 2024

Then & Now is an opportunity for artists to reflect on their passage of time as creatives over the past 10 years. To submit work that reminds them, or tells a story, of where they have come from, or where they are confidently now.

Artists are reflections of society – they record the world around them, whether sub-consciously or more determinedly obvious through the visual language they chose to use.

Then & Now is an exhibition that will celebrate this visual language and in turn acknowledge the passing of time and events that have shaped contemporary artists in today’s society.

Transparent as a Dragonfly

Arte Borgo Gallery, Borgo Vittorio 25, Roma

5th – 18th October 2023

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Italo Calvino’s birth, we are delighted to announce a joint exhibition ‘Transparent as a Dragonfly’.

Curators Anna Isopo & Martina Scavone of Arte Borgo, and Rita Carta Manias & Lesley Bunch of ArtCan, invited artists to choose a line, passage or chapter from ‘Invisible Cities’, and propose work in response to it. The title for the exhibition is taken from a passage in Calvino’s Invisible Cities

“Perhaps everything lies in knowing what words to speak, what actions to perform, and in what order and rhythm; or else someone’s gaze, answer, gesture is enough; it is enough for someone to do something for the sheer pleasure of doing it, and for his pleasure to become the pleasure of others: at that moment, all spaces change, all heights, distances; the city is transfigured, becomes crystalline, transparent as a dragonfly.” Calvino, Invisible Cities, (1972).

ArtCan Virtual Gallery

The waiting is over; Climate Change is here. We are in an anxious time, holding our breath, watching developments unfold as scientists,  governments and ordinary people scramble to find solutions and alternative behaviour to save the planet as we know it. This exhibition will showcase the ArtCan artists’ reactions to Climate Change.

As well as the emotive response, we are exploring hope, going forward, the innovations and positive changes we see happening around us.
