I was born in Hereford in the UK but spent a great deal of my childhood moving from one country to another; this developed into a love of travel and experiencing new places. I spent a year after my Fine Art degree travelling and immersing myself in other cultures. I absorb these memories knowing they may later reappear in my paintings.
Through painting I convey my experience of a landscape. I aim to describe a space, what it is to move through, round and over a landscape, touching and being touched by the elements.
My intention is not to depict a space visually but to uncover the feel of what it is to really experience my surroundings. I work in acrylic or oil onto canvas to create layer upon layer, sometimes revealing the past to create the depth and feeling I am aiming for.
Gestural brushstrokes contrast with flat calming layers of colour. I aim to create paintings that are made with energy and emotion.
I love the work of Turner, he was ahead of his time! I adore abstract artists who have a passion for colour, in particular Howard Hodgkin. I also love Peter Lanyon’s expressive aerial experiences of the landscape. I admire Joan Mitchell for her energy and Helen Frankenhaler’s intense colour.
I am so grateful to be a part of the wonderful artist community that is ArtCan. It is such a joy to have opportunities to exhibit as part of a team, help one another and collaborate together to promote, share and celebrate our work. ArtCan has given me such fantastic experiences already; presenting my work in front of an audience, hanging and dismantling shows and most importantly the valuable connections with like-minded creative people. I feel incredibly lucky to be a part of such a supportive network.
I am a fully qualified art tutor and teach part time alongside my painting practice. I love being able to share my enthusiasm for art with my students. Often the work we do together exploring new techniques and materials inspires my own painting.
My advice for artists starting out in their careers is to grab every opportunity that comes your way, never give up, stay positive and do what you love!
