Artist of the Month: Marjan Khorram Golkaran

My interest in nature is rooted in my childhood, when I became sensitive to it through Iranian tradition and culture, which is itself derived from nature, as well as living in northern Iran. With the development of industry and technology, the man of the modern age has become ignorant of the nature that is his main resort. Especially in developing countries and the third world, this negligence is more evident, and since all of us live on the same planet, these damages affect the entire earth, and lead to the extinction of various plant and animal species.

As an artist, inspiration can come from anywhere. There have been hundreds of art  movements of different collision and significance over the centuries, but I think I like the abstract movement most. I get my best idea in nature, like sitting on a mound and letting my imagination start to abstract and open up in my sketchbook. The best art I feel I ever produced is my ‘Lost Nature’ series – trying to show how people ignore and destroy their environment.

The limitations in my country, especially for women, prevent their progress and the realisation of their dreams and aspirations. Because of this, I was very much interested in the opportunities ArtCan offers. I believe that creating motivation for an artist, regardless of gender, ethnicity, etc., is one of the most important pillars of nurturing the spirit.

Work, work, work – it is so important to devote yourself to it if you wish to succeed, and also I personally believe that meeting new people has given me experience and achievement that has helped me in all areas of my life. Everyday I am busy working on my painting projects, so I hardly have any leisure time, but these accomplishments made me who I am.
